(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Seth I. Koslow (D – Merrick) recently welcomed Bellmore JFK High School junior Jordana Wohlleben to his office at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building to discuss the implementation of New York State’s “Gio’s Law”, advocacy for Legislator Koslow’s proposal to equip every Nassau County Police Department vehicle with epinephrine autoinjectors (EpiPens) – and how the concept can be further expanded into settings well beyond police vehicles.
For Wohlleben, the Publicity Coordinator for the Kennedy Student Government, the issue is personal. After being diagnosed with tree nut and severe pollen allergies, she began weekly allergy shots. However, after receiving a weekly injection for six months, her next weekly dose put her into anaphylactic shock. Thankfully, the office was equipped with two epinephrine injectors and oxygen, which saved her life while the ambulance was on its way.
“Jordana is living proof that ready access to EpiPens can make a monumental difference in the treatment of dangerous allergic reactions, and I am so proud of how she has channeled her personal journey into advocacy,” Legislator Koslow said. “I am looking forward to working with her to pass Gio’s Law in Nassau County a set the stage for this common-sense proposal to become a national standard.”
