(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - In observance of January as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, Nassau County Legislator Seth I. Koslow (D – Merrick) is partnering with Dr. Pepper Martin of Freeport-based Destiny House Christian Center and Women Intended for Excellence (WIFE, Inc.) to host a Human Trafficking Symposium on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025 at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building in Mineola.
Emceed by Dr. Martin and retired registered nurse Kathleen Moran, the program is scheduled to include presentations by Queens County ADA Jessica Melton and Nassau County ADA Christina Guida, who will discuss the current state of human trafficking in their respective Counties and efforts underway to combat the crisis.
There will also be a panel discussion featuring psychiatrist Dr. Theresa Taylor Williams, Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho, an instrumental figure in shaping the New York court system’s response to human trafficking; and testimony by a survivor of human trafficking. A final segment will draw attention to not-for-profit organizations in our area that aid victims of human trafficking. Numerous video presentations and Q-and-A opportunities with audience members are also planned.
“Human trafficking inflicts unimaginable violence upon its victims, robs them of their dignity, and relies upon silence to enable such heinous crimes to slip through the cracks of our society,” Legislator Koslow said. “I encourage everyone to observe National Human Trafficking Prevention Month by joining us at the Legislature for an event that will help us become better informed about this humanitarian crisis and more empowered to be a part of the solution.”
