(FREEPORT, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D - Freeport) successfully spearheaded efforts to secure passage of a $150,000 Community Revitalization Program (CRP) grant for the Incorporated Village of Freeport. The Village will utilize those funds to purchase portable radios and related accessories for use by the Freeport Fire Department.
County funding for the project, which was approved by the full Nassau County Legislature on Monday, September 21, will be provided through an intermunicipal agreement with the Village.
The CRP came to fruition after Legislator Mulé secured commitments from Freeport’s bipartisan legislative delegation - which includes Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams (D - Freeport) and Legislator Steven Rhoads - to contribute equal sums toward the cost of the project.
“Every day, our first responders - many of them volunteers - rush toward danger to protect the lives, homes and property of their neighbors. Every moment matters during these urgent crisis calls, and reliable communication tools are essential for ensuring the safest, most successful response possible,” Legislator Mulé said. “I am grateful to the Legislature for their unanimous support of this initiative, and I thank Minority Leader Abrahams for his support of an endeavor that will ensure our first responders are equipped with these potentially life-saving tools.”
“By making this investment in radio equipment for our firefighters, we are further empowering them to serve and protect the public in the face of great peril,” Minority Leader Abrahams. “I thank Legislator Mulé for her leadership in this initiative to ensure that these courageous volunteers are prepared and optimally equipped so that they can return safely to their families after completing their selfless service to the community.”
