(BALDWIN, NY) – Nassau County Legislator Laura Curran is proud to announce the release of the Baldwin Downtown & Commercial Corridor Resiliency Study (Baldwin DCCR) Final Report, the culmination of an extensive year-long local community engagement process. The Baldwin DCCR Study was conceived through the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, New York Rising Community Revitalization Program. The Final Report can be found online at www.BaldwinDCCRStudy.com.
The Final Report sets forth comprehensive land use, mobility, green infrastructure and storm resiliency recommendations for the Grand Avenue corridor from Merrick Road, north to the Southern State Parkway in Baldwin. “Over the past year, my office and the Nassau County Department of Public Works, have collaborated with community organizations, the Town of Hempstead, the LIRR, and NYSDOT, to identify solutions that will revitalize Baldwin’s downtown,” said Legislator Curran. “These solutions will empower residents and business owners to achieve their collective goals of making Baldwin a safer, more economically prosperous, and resilient community,” she added.
The Baldwin DCCR Study evaluates the potential for downtown revitalization designed to promote new residential options and increase demand for local businesses near public transportation. This project also incorporates innovative public outreach tools and techniques, land use and economic planning, and principles of smart growth including transit-oriented development, placemaking, Complete Streets, and green infrastructure.
It is important to point out that community and local governmental collaboration does yield success. The Baldwin community’s participation in the planning process over the past several years has gained attention from the Town, County, State and federal government, leading to substantial grant investment. Since 2011, Baldwin has been awarded over $600K in planning funds, and nearly $5M in federal and State discretionary grants for design and construction. “As the community stakeholder and intergovernmental partnership continues, I am confident this trend WILL continue in Baldwin, along with new opportunities to leverage private investment,” said Legislator Curran.
