Legislator Laura Curran encourages using higher-than-expected county sales tax receipts to prevent the elimination of 11 NICE Bus routes on Sunday.
(Mineola, NY) - On Tuesday, January 12, 2016 Nassau County’s Office of Legislative Budget Review reported sales tax receipts for the fourth quarter of 2015 at roughly $4 million higher than expected. In light of this, Nassau County Legislator Laura Curran (D- Baldwin) sent a letter to County Executive Mangano urging the County to use the money to prevent the 11 NICE bus routes scheduled to be eliminated on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from being cut.
It costs roughly $3.2 million a year to run the 11 routes, and even just using $1 million of the expected sales tax receipts would extend service through the winter months. “I take particular interest in this issue because four of the targeted routes are in communities in my South Shore district, which has a higher population density than much of the rest of the county,” said Legislator Curran in her letter.
