(BALDWIN/FREEPORT, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D - Freeport) proudly partnered with Sonny’s Canal House, Operation SPLASH, her colleagues in government, and community volunteers to host the fourth annual “Canal Cleanup” on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Co-hosted by Operation SPLASH and the Town of Hempstead’s Sanitary District No. 2, the event attracted more than 40 volunteers. Together, they removed two tons of trash and debris from Freeport and Baldwin’s waterways and inlets. Local business supporters, including Long Island Bagel Café, No Good Burger Joint of Baldwin, and Barrier Brewery of Oceanside provided meals, refreshments and raffle prizes for the hard-working volunteers.

“Keeping our waterways and wetlands clean is an essential part of our ongoing misson to protect the environment, preserve the health of our local ecosystems, and enhance the beauty of Nassau County’s waterfront communities,” Legislator Mulé said. “I thank Operation SPLASH, Sonny’s Canal House, Sani 2 and all of our wonderful volunteers for rolling up their sleeves to preserve these precious natural resources for future generations to enjoy.”

“It’s always a good thing when our elected officials join us on our bay clean-ups,” said Rob Weltner, President of Operation SPLASH. “It's a great way for them to experience Long Island's marine environment and the amount of marine debris that’s out in our bays and salt marshes that affect us and the wildlife that calls it home.”

“We’re extremely proud to see the continuation of our 4th Annual ‘Canal Cleanup’ at Sonny’s Canal House this year in collaboration with Operation SPLASH and Sanitary District 2,” Gareth Moore, Joint Owner of Sonny's Canal House said. “We are also proud to announce that this year’s event marked the first year that Sonny’s Canal House was fundraising for scholarships for Environmental Science students, which will continue annually with this great tradition in our community going forward.”
