(NORTH MERRICK, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Seth I. Koslow (D – Merrick) supported National Drug Takeback Day in America by joining forces with the Bellmore-Merrick school community, the Nassau County Police Department, parent groups, anti-drug advocates and his colleagues in government to host the community’s 11th annual drive-through “Shed the Meds” event at the Brookside School in North Merrick on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Residents were given the opportunity to dispose of unused, unwanted and/or expired medications securely and anonymously. This is also one of the few Shed the Meds events to accept needles, diabetes testing devices and other sharps, which is made possible through a partnership with Community Action for Social Justice. Participants received care packages from the Bellmore-Merrick Community Coalition, which included drug deactivation and disposal pouches furnished by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports, pill bottle locking devices, and more.
“Shed the meds events help us protect the environment and prevent drugs from falling into the hands of people who should not have them, and the manner in which the Bellmore-Merrick community has rallied around this cause is truly admirable,” Legislator Koslow said. “It was a pleasure to join them in doing our part to keep our community safe, and we are all so thankful to Community Parent Center Director Wendy Tepfer for her tireless, life-saving advocacy.”
