(BALDWIN, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) attended the Four Chaplains commemoration ceremony at Baldwin American Legion Post No. 246 on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The observance pays tribute to the 81st anniversary of the story of the sinking of the USAT Dorchester by a German submarine on Feb. 3, 1943. Aboard the vessel, four chaplains: Alexander Goode (Jewish), Clark Poling (Baptist), George Fox (Methodist), and John Washington (Catholic) helped calm the passengers and crew, organize an evacuation, and distributed life jackets. When the life jackets ran out, they gave up their own to others and linked arms in prayer.
“The Four Chaplains are the embodiment of selfless sacrifice, remarkable faith and amazing grace in the face of tragedy and their own impending deaths,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé said. “Their story is an inspiration to all of us, and I appreciate how the Baldwin American Legion commemorates this moment in history to the present day.”
