(BALDWIN, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) applauded the Monday, Jan. 6 approval of a key contract that will advance the second phase of improvements to Baldwin’s Grand Avenue
The Legislature’s Rules committee voted unanimously to approve a $1,007,975 contract between Nassau County’s Department of Public Works and Lockheed, Kessler and Bartlett, Inc. for engineering and design services for improvements to Grand Avenue from Stanton Avenue to the Southern State Parkway, including the overpass. Planned improvements include but are not limited to road resurfacing and pavement remarking; upgrading traffic signal infrastructure; installing and repairing sidewalks, curbs, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps, bulb-outs and drainage structures.
Last September, Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé secured an additional $800,000 in bond authorization for phase two of the Grand Avenue upgrade which, when paired with previously authorized funds, totals $1,042,759 and will pay for the engineering and design phases. The County’s capital plan currently calls for $10,815,000 in funding for the project, which could be accessed by passing future bond ordinances as work progresses.
“Completing the transformation of Grand Avenue is an essential component of our longstanding mission of stimulating the economic revitalization of downtown Baldwin and making this major roadway safer for pedestrians and motorists alike,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé said. “I am thrilled that the Rules committee has approved this vital contract and that the County has sufficient funding in place to begin the initial stages of this major infrastructure investment.”
The second phase builds upon nearly $7 million in completed work on Grand Avenue between Merrick Avenue to Stanton Avenue and reflects Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure in Baldwin and across Legislative District 6.
Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé previously advocated for and secured $14.3 million in capital plan commitments for the Baldwin Complete Streets project and is currently fighting for an additional $5.7 million in the proposed Fiscal Year 2025 capital plan. These investments will be further bolstered by the downtown Baldwin revitalization initiative, for which there is $3 million authorized and another $2 million pending.
