(FREEPORT, N.Y.) - Ahead of the April 22 observance of Earth Day in America, Nassau County Legislators Debra Mulé (D - Freeport) and Seth I. Koslow (D – Merrick) joined forces with dozens of volunteers, including the Freeport-based nonprofit The Green Army, residents, park lovers, and local stakeholders from the South Shore Conservation Society, Freeport Rotary Club, the Boy and Girl Scouts of Nassau, Freeport Public Schools and Operation SPLASH, for an Earth Day community clean-up at Freeport’s Brookside Preserve on Saturday, April 20.

As the cloudy and drizzly weather cleared throughout the morning, volunteers delved into the lush surroundings of the Preserve to clear away debris and enhance the ecological health of the Nassau County-preserved wetlands, resulting in dozens of bags of refuse being cleared away thanks to the community’s Earth Day weekend TLC for Mother Nature.

“A little bit of rain will never be enough to deter the Freeport community and its love for the beautiful Brookside Preserve. In fact, this was by far the largest group of volunteers we have ever had participate in this event,” Legislator Mulé said. “It was wonderful to once again have such an enthusiastic response to this cherished local tradition, and we are thankful for all of the organizations and volunteers that made such a positive impact upon this natural treasure in our community.”

“I can think of few better ways of celebrating Earth Day than rolling up your sleeves to protect our planet – and that’s exactly what we did at Brookside Preserve this weekend,” Legislator Koslow said. “I hope to be a part of this annual tradition for many years to come, and I appreciate all of the hard work from the organizers and the volunteers that continue to make this event so successful.”
