(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – On Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023 New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced her request for a Major Disaster Declaration related to a substantial late-September rainstorm that deluged Nassau County. On Jan. 31, 2024, Governor Hochul announced that the Biden administration has approved the State’s request.
Following the news, Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) issued the following statement:
“The Biden administration’s approval of a Major Disaster Declaration is welcome news for the residents of Nassau County – many of whom have suffered tremendous losses in the aftermath of extreme weather events like last fall’s historic rainstorm,” Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) said. “I thank Governor Hochul and her team for their successful advocacy, and I encourage every eligible municipality and not-for-profit organization to take full advantage of the resources that are now available to rebuild and harden our critical infrastructure. With climate change increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather across our region, we must act boldly to protect the quality of life and safety of our communities.”
