(GLEN COVE, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D - Glen Cove) thanked U.S. Congressman Thomas Suozzi for securing the creation of a primary medical care pilot program for veterans at Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 347 in Glen Cove.

The pilot program, which began on Tuesday, Oct. 16, entails the stationing of a Northport VA Medical Center mobile medical unit (MMU) at the VFW hall from 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. each Tuesday. There, a VA physician will see veterans by appointment, and an outreach coordinator will be available to assist answer questions and assist veterans with VA applications.

Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton, City of Glen Cove elected officials, Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce leaders and veterans in touring the MMU, which is equipped with a wheelchair lift, a soundproof audiology testing lab and an examining room among other medical amenities.

“Nassau County is truly enriched by the presence of so many brave men and women who served the United States with distinction,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I applaud Congressman Suozzi, the Glen Cove VFW and everyone who did their part to make medical care more accessible for our neighbors who have already given so much to this nation. I urge every eligible veteran to take advantage of this pilot program so that we may one day establish a permanent VA clinic in Glen Cove.”

Veterans can make appointments to be seen at the MMU by calling the VA’s centralized appointment desk at 631-261-4400, extension 7978.
