Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton Secures Long-Awaited Hotel-Motel Grant for Glen Cove BID’s Downtown

(GLEN COVE, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) proudly announced that she and the Minority Caucus secured an agreement with the County administration that delivers a long-awaited $7,000 Hotel-Motel Occupancy Tax Fund grant to the Glen Cove Business Improvement District (BID) in support of its Downtown Sounds concert series.

The grant was approved as part of a package of amendments to the 2023 Capital Plan and bond authorizations that will fund major investments in road infrastructure, public safety, Nassau Community College, and more. As part of the agreement, Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton and the caucus delivered $1.75 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding that will equip Hempstead Village to embark upon the initial stage of critical improvements that are necessary to remove 1, 4 dioxane from its drinking water.

“For nearly three decades, Downtown Sounds has become a cherished Glen Cove tradition that brings our community together and makes our City’s amazing restaurant district more prosperous and vibrant with every show,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Although this grant took more effort than usual to secure and the funds are a little bit late for this season, I am already looking forward to 2025 and will be applying for additional grant funding for next season’s shows. I am thankful to my colleagues in the Democratic Minority Caucus for standing with me to ensure that communities across our County receive their fair share of taxpayer resources.”

First held as Jazz in the Square in 1997, Downtown Sounds has become a major regional draw that attracts thousands of people to downtown Glen Cove, with top-flight talent spanning musical genres applying to perform on the main stage. The program yielded nine Friday night concerts this July and August for summer evenings filled with dancing in the streets.
