(PORT WASHINGTON and BAXTER ESTATES, N.Y.) – Nassau County has submitted revised plans for repairing the Shore Road Sea Wall in Port Washington, Department of Public Works (DPW) officials have confirmed to Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove).
Officials have also confirmed to Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton that the County will allocate $5 million in capital resources toward revamping and repairing this vital thoroughfare.
The re-filing of plans comes after the contractor on the project identified concerns with the initial approach that necessitated revisions and a modified permit from the State. After completing immediate repairs in November with a focus on plugging the hole in the wall and backfilling, the contractor met with the NYSDEC officials at low tide to review proposed modifications prior to re-submitting to the State.
The revised plans for work that will secure the seawall, mitigate flooding, reduce coastal erosion, and more are now awaiting NYSDEC approvals, with hopes that a permit will be issued so that work can begin in the spring. In the interim, cement barricades were installed based upon concerns about the integrity of the roadway and the desire to prevent accidents.
“Progress on the Shore Road project is a shining example of what can multiple levels of government and leaders of all political persuasions can accomplish by working collaboratively,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I am thankful to the State and the County for dedicating such significant resources toward this vital project and applaud Baxter Estates Mayor Nora Haagenson for her relentless efforts to complete this project and give the people living up and down the Port Washington peninsula the peace of mind and safety they deserve. We are all appreciative of your continued patience as the work continues to fully repair this vital roadway.”
The project will address significant damage to the seawall, sidewalk, and a portion of the southbound travel lane on Shore Road – a route used by approximately 12,000 residents and 8,000 vehicles weekly. Supplementing the $5 million in County funding, Governor Kathy Hochul last summer awarded a $7.7 million state grant to the Village of Baxter Estates.
