(PORT WASHINGTON NORTH, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) applauded New York State for awarding the Village of Port Washington North an additional $675,000 in grant funds toward the construction of an accessible playground focused on meeting the needs of children with disabilities and autism.
Paired with an additional $1 million state awarded last year, the funds will be applied toward building the accessible playground on part of a 4.75-acre village-owned parcel near Channel Drive. Planned attractions include Americans with Disabilities Act-complaint musical playground equipment with sensory features, a “quiet grove” to give children respite in moments of overstimulation, a splash pad, outdoor exercise equipment, enhanced lighting for a walking trail, and more. Plans call for the remaining funds to be drawn from Village and County resources.
“Completing this investment in Port Washington North will address a critical need for accessible playgrounds in our region and further enhance Port Washington North as a destination for all Nassau County families,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I am so glad to see that New York State is supporting this effort so strongly, and I thank Mayor Bob Weitzner and his entire Village Board for leading the way on a project that will ensure a disability is no longer a barrier to enjoying the simple joys of childhood.”
