Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton Applauds Approval of Nearly $1M for Improvements to Welwyn Preserve

(GLEN COVE, N.Y.) – The members of the Nassau County Legislature’s Rules committee voted unanimously on Monday, Sept. 9 to authorize a $988,000 contract for improvements to the Welwyn Preserve in Glen Cove.

The contract, which calls for the demolition of three deteriorated and unsafe structures – specifically, the laundry building and greenhouse structures – within the preserve, is funded through resources in the County’s capital budget. The 204-acre preserve is the former estate of Harold Irving Pratt and currently is home to the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County.

The final vote was 6-0 in favor, with Deputy Presiding Officer Thomas McKevitt (R – East Meadow) recusing.

“Not only is Welwyn Preserve a storied historic site, it is the home of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center – a beacon of advocacy in the urgent mission of combating the scourge of antisemitism in our society,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton, ranking member of the Legislature’s Rules committee, said. “I am thankful to my colleagues for voting to approve this investment in the safety and beautification of one of Nassau’s greatest natural treasures.”
