[ARCHIVED] Whitton Stands with Diverse Coalition to Announce Launch of Task Force Against Anti-Semitism

Holocaust Museum - DeRiggi Whitton

(GLEN COVE, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) joined dozens of community, religious and political leaders at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center on Monday, Dec. 9 to announce the formation of an Islandwide Task Force Against Anti-Semitism and Symbols of Hate.

During this press conference, Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton confirmed that she will work in partnership with New York State and Nassau County officials to bolster security at the museum, which is located within Nassau County’s Welwyn Preserve.

“I’ve always felt proud to have this center here – to think that tolerance is taught in Glen Cove is really an honor. It’s a perfect, beautifully secluded place for paying respects to the souls who perished in the Holocaust,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “We’ve met with the director of the Holocaust Memorial and we’re going to be putting in for grants for cameras and other security mechanisms.”

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone convened the Task Force following a series of bias incidents across Long Island, including the discovery of anti-Semitic and hateful vandalism at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center.

Leaders of the task force are slated to convene in the coming weeks to develop coordinated, island-wide efforts to educate the public, promote diversity, and confront bigotry through partnership with law enforcement and community leaders.
