Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton on Transfer of Michael Sposato to Nassau University Medical Center

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – Michael Sposato, formerly Commissioner of Corrections for the Nassau County Correctional Facility, has been transferred to a new role at Nassau University Medical Center, where he will make $275,000/year as the Executive Director for Public Safety and Investigations.

Following this announcement, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) issued the following statement:

“Michael Sposato has a significant and troubling past in Nassau County. He was fired by former County Executive Curran in 2018 because of the high number of inmate deaths that occurred during his tenure as Sheriff, and that is why our caucus strongly opposed County Executive Blakeman's decision to re-hire him in 2022,” Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D - Glen Cove) said.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for the Blakeman administration to make this move without any explanation and to pay Mr. Sposato a salary of $275,000/year as this crucial safety net hospital struggles to survive. Ensuring the safety of all patients must be our top priority, and based upon his past performance, it is my opinion that Mr. Sposato lacks the necessary qualifications and skills to adequately fulfill this role,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said.
