DeRiggi-Whitton Encourages Residents to Take Advantage of S.E.P.T.I.C. Grant Program

(MINEOLA, N.Y.)  - As 2024 gets underway, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) is reminding eligible property owners to take full advantage of a grant program that helps defray the cost of upgrading their septic systems.

Nassau homeowners and small businesses that discharge less than 1,000 gallons a day of wastewater are eligible to receive up to $20,000 in grants toward the installation of modern, nitrogen-reducing septic systems through Nassau County’s S.E.P.T.I.C. (Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness) program. The program was launched in April 2021 during the administration of former Nassau County Executive Laura Curran using millions in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding and state grant funds.

As of this January, 118 upgrades have been completed, and more than $8 million has been awarded to fund approximately 400 nitrogen-reducing upgrades, according to the Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District.

“Protecting our water is one of the best New Year’s resolutions we can pursue – and it is one that will pay dividends for future generations,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “It has been truly encouraging to see so many upgrades come to fruition, especially on the North Shore where this initiative is especially impactful. I strongly encourage any property owner who needs to replace an aging septic system to see if they are eligible to receive a grant through this program.”
