Cite Concerns for the Safety and Security of Employees, the Health and Welfare of the Inmates and Continued Financial Burden Placed on Taxpayers

(Mineola, NY) – Today Nassau Democratic Legislators, led by Democratic Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams made an unprecedented announcement calling for the immediate resignation of Nassau County Sheriff Sposato. The entire Nassau County Democratic Legislators stood beside a ‘laundry list’ of negative headlines from 2016 and a mock report card that graded the Sheriff on safety, security and taxpayer protection; they claimed he received an ‘F’ for ‘fail’ in all three categories.
“We do not call for Sheriff Sposato’s resignation lightly. It is not a knee jerk reaction to one thing or another; it is truly a reaction to a recent record of failure of the most important requirements of his job – to keep the jail, and those who both work and reside within it safe and secure at the smallest financial burden to taxpayers,” said Democratic Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams.
“Nassau County residents deserve better than a Sheriff and county jail that is performing far below acceptable safety and security standards. This is not just a record that shows itself to be inhumane and places the health and welfare of jail staff and inmates at risk; this is a bad economic policy that leaves taxpayers vulnerable for costly lawsuits for years to come,” shared Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton.
