Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton Provides Update on Emergency Repairs to Shore Road Sea Wall

Shore Road - DDW

(PORT WASHINGTON and BAXTER ESTATES, N.Y.) – Nassau County completed emergency work to secure Shore Road in Port Washington during the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 30, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) announced. Contractors installed the temporary barrier adjacent to the eroded section of Shore Road, which required the closure of southbound Shore Road several hours. Work was completed by 3 a.m. on Tuesday to ensure construction was done before the morning rush hour.

This work follows the discovery of a damaged seawall section, sidewalk, and a portion of the southbound travel lane on Shore Road, a vital route used by approximately 12,000 residents and an estimated 8,000 vehicles weekly. Governor Kathy Hochul recently awarded $7.7 million in state funding to the Village of Baxter Estates to apply toward infrastructure upgrades that secure the seawall, mitigate flooding, reduce coastal erosion, and more.

“Shore Road is an essential daily pathway for numerous communities on the Port Washington peninsula, and this emergency project will safeguard the integrity of the roadway and sidewalks while a permanent solution is devised and implemented,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “We will continue to work closely with Baxter Estates Mayor Nora Haagenson and keep the community updated as this critical investment in our infrastructure progresses.”
