[ARCHIVED] Drucker Supports Proposal to Restrict Sale of Vaping Products Near Schools, Parks and Playgrounds

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Today, Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) announced his support for a proposal that would restrict the sale of vaping and e-cigarette products within 1,000 linear feet of schools, public parks or playgrounds.

“Legislator Kennedy’s proposal wisely builds upon existing Nassau County laws that are designed to protect our youth from exposure to the dangers of nicotine addiction and vaping,” Legislator Drucker said. “I support the concept put forth in this proposal and look forward to working with all of my colleagues in the coming months to protect our youth.”

The proposal complements initiatives that were introduced by Legislator Drucker and championed by the Minority Caucus as part of their years-long efforts to combat the rise of vaping and curb nicotine and tobacco use in the County.

In October 2019, County Executive Curran signed into law Legislator Drucker’s bill to restrict the advertising of age-restricted products - such as cigarettes, tobacco and vaping products - within 1,000 feet of establishments commonly frequented by youth. Later that year, Legislator Drucker also secured adoption of a Countywide ban on the sale of flavored vaping products in Nassau County, except for those that are tobacco, mint, or menthol flavored - a measure that was later adopted statewide.

Prior to the Legislature’s actions to address vaping, Legislator Drucker in 2018, Legislator Drucker secured passage of legislation restricting the sale of tobacco products to individuals under age 21 - bringing a signature effort initiated by his predecessor, the late Judy Jacobs, to fruition.
