Davis and Nicks Secure $400,000 in Bond Authorization

(HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislators Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) and Olena Nicks (D – Uniondale) have secured commitments from the administration of Nassau County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman to begin the next phase of upgrades to the Joysetta and Julius Pearse African American Museum of Nassau County. Under the agreement, the County will tap into $400,000 of the $1 million in bond authorization for forthcoming refurbishments.

The Wednesday, April 23 vote comes in tandem with an agreement that delivers a $1.3 million package of capital plan funding and bond authorizations for public safety agencies. This is a major victory for the Minority Caucus, which successfully leveraged their votes on the capital infrastructure plan to end the Blakeman administration’s more than yearlong freeze on first responder grants and other crucial community projects for districts represented by Democratic legislators.

A centerpiece of African American history and culture on Long Island since 1970, the Joysetta and Julius Pearse Museum offers a rotating series of exhibits showcasing local and national African American artists. It also holds numerous community-based events, including celebrations of Black History Month and the lives of historical figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, along with educational programs.

“For generations, the Joysetta and Julius Pearse African American Museum has been a beacon of enlightenment and knowledge for the residents of Nassau County,” Legislator Davis said. “At a time when it is more essential than ever to amplify the lessons of Black history in our society, I am proud to vote for a capital plan that makes such a significant investment in support of the vital cultural mission that Joysetta and Julius Pearse spearheaded for decades.”

“Black history is American history – and the Joysetta and Julius Pearse African American Museum of Nassau County is a regionally significant attraction that enriches countless lives through the exemplary celebrations, exhibitions and events it hosts,” Legislator Nicks said. “I am thrilled that the Fiscal Year 2025 capital plan invests in the future of this iconic facility and embraces the noble vision that Mr. and Mrs. Pearse devoted their lives to.”
