(ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) thanked the Rockville Centre community for donating more than 650 pounds of food during a food drive in support of Sharon’s Pantry at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Rockville Centre.
Hosted by Associated in Rockville Centre on Sunday, Sept. 29, the food drive was held in partnership with Island Harvest in observance of September as Hunger Action Month. Its success was powered by support from individual shoppers and local partners, including generous donations from the RVC Lions Club and Rabbi Lerner of Temple B’nai Sholom-Beth David, as well as support from the Cassidy family, Rabbi Cohen of Central Synagogue Beth Emeth, RVC Chamber, Greystone Deli, Kookaburra Coffee, Gino’s Pizza, Ace Hardware, and others.
Sharon’s Pantry is named after Sharon Sheppard, the current assistant director of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Rockville Centre, the Pantry is dedicated to helping local residents who face food insecurity and was founded in the spring of 2020 in partnership with the Anti-Racism Project. Sharon’s Pantry is spearheaded by the Project’s co-administrator Rena Riback and supported by local donations and Island Harvest.
“We are all better when we work together, and the outpouring of support we witnessed for Sharon’s Pantry beautifully illustrates the true spirit of Rockville Centre,” Legislator Davis said. “Your generosity will go a long way toward supporting Sharon’s Pantry as it pursues its mission, and I am thankful to Associated for hosting us, Island Harvest for making this possible, the Rockville Centre Public Library for joining us, and all of the community members who took the time to support a good cause.”
