(ELMONT, N.Y.) – Long-awaited upgrades to the Elmont Water Tower are nearing completion in the coming weeks, Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) has confirmed.
In a Wednesday, April 16 update published on social media, Legislator Solages confirmed that work resumed on the water tower approximately two weeks earlier and that contractor NUCO had already replaced the torn containment system and cabling on the tank, and addressed instances of flash rusting on the tank while it was dormant.
Work is now underway to apply the stripe coat to the tank; with improving weather conditions, the process could be completed more quickly, officials said. Once stripe coating is finished, the final coat will be applied, two “Elmont” logos will be affixed to the side of the tank, and the containment of the tank will be removed. Subsequent work to get the tank back into service will not impact the neighborhood, officials advised Legislator Solages.
Throughout the multi-year process of completing repairs to the Water Tower, Legislator Solages has advocated for officials to prioritize this investment in the future of Elmont. He has worked with representatives from the Water Authority and representatives from the Nassau County Police Department, which housed communications equipment on the tower, to identify solutions for advancing the project, which is now on the verge of completion.
“For many years, we have fought as a community to modernize the Elmont Water Tower and revitalize it to become a fitting beacon for the true gateway to Nassau County – whether you are driving in, arriving in Elmont from Grand Central Station, or flying above our beautiful and diverse community,” Legislator Solages said. “I thank Elmont residents for their patience throughout this process and the Western Nassau Water Authority for continuing to follow through on this vital infrastructure project.”
