Statement from Legislator Solages Denouncing , Racist Claims Targeting Haitian Immigrants

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – On Monday, Sept. 9, prominent national Republican figures including U.S. Senators J.D. Vance, Ted Cruz, and other right-wing influencers began promulgating unsubstantiated, racist social media posts targeting Haitian immigrants. In response, Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) issued the following statement:

“As the first Haitian American to be elected to the Nassau County Legislature and a father, I am absolutely appalled and disgusted by these reckless and downright racist attacks,” Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) said. “This type of hateful rhetoric will cause innocent people to be targeted for bigotry, bullying and abuse.”

“Senators Vance and Cruz must immediately retract their false and slanderous allegations and apologize for the harm they have caused to Haitian Americans and Haitian immigrants. Elected officials at every level of government, including my Congressman, Anthony D’Esposito, have a responsibility and a moral duty to correct the record, and I welcome him to join me at a rally denouncing this destructive and inflammatory rhetoric which I am hosting at Bethany French Baptist Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12.”
