(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislators Kevan M. Abrahams (D - Freeport) and Debra Mulé (D - Freeport) had the privilege of welcoming the Freeport Red Devils to the Nassau County Legislature to celebrate their victory in the Long Island Class I football championships.
This latest triumphant visit to the Legislature by the Red Devils also marked a successful Long Island Class I championship title defense.
On Monday, Dec. 16, Legislators Abrahams and Mulé presented Nassau County Legislature Certificates of Recognition to the students and their coaches to commemorate their outstanding undefeated 2019 season. Dozens of student-athletes were in attendance, as were head coach Russ Cellan and other Freeport district leaders.
This year’s 42-14 win over William Floyd at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium on Friday, Nov. 29 marks the third Long Island Class I title in four years for the Red Devils and the program’s seventh overall. By capturing the Class I title, the Red Devils won their 24th consecutive game - Long Island varsity football’s longest active winning streak.
“Not only do the Red Devils thrill us with their achievements on the football field, they bring our community together as a source of great pride for all Freeport residents,” Legislator Abrahams said. “It is always a pleasure to welcome these young men to the Legislature to celebrate the hard work, dedication and teamwork that resulted in yet another triumphant season.”
“Through several generations, Freeport’s Red Devils have established themselves in the history books as one of Long Island’s all-time best football programs,” Legislator Mulé said. “I’m delighted to welcome these outstanding athletes to the Nassau County Legislature and join Legislator Abrahams and my colleagues in celebrating this achievement.”
