Minority Leader Abrahams, Members of Minority Democratic Caucus Demand Action from Presiding Officer Nicolello on
Nassau County Taxpayer Protection Plan
(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D - Freeport) and members of the Minority Legislative Caucus today demanded that Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello and Republican lawmakers end their politically-motivated stall tactics and instead take concrete steps toward ratifying and implementing County Executive Laura Curran’s Taxpayer Protection Plan.
On April 30, County Executive Curran filed legislation that would establish a five-year phase-in of the new assessed values generated through the first Countywide reassessment following eight years of frozen tax rolls under the Mangano administration. New York State approved implementation of the phase-in, which is designed to moderate the immediate impact of the reassessment, as part of the fiscal year 2019-2020 state budget.
However, Republican leaders have allowed the County Executive’s phase-in bill to languish for more than a month and have displayed no urgency to date for scheduling a public hearing on the legislation.
“After the Republican Majority and the Mangano administration broke Nassau County’s tax assessment system through eight years of willful neglect and mismanagement, County Executive Curran took bold and necessary action toward restoring fairness and sanity to our assessment system,” Minority Leader Abrahams said. “It’s time for the Republican Majority to stop playing politics with assessment and instead focus their energies on protecting taxpayers from the consequences of a mess the previous administration and its enablers chose to create. They can take a step in that direction by enacting County Executive Curran’s Taxpayer Protection Plan without delay.”
