(UNIONDALE, N.Y.) - For the first time since 2019, Nassau County Legislator Kevan M. Abrahams (D – Freeport) and community partners Heeling Soles, Inc.; Glory House Recovery, Inc.; and Charmaine Robin of State Farm Uniondale joined forces to host the ninth annual ComeInUnity Family Fun Day and Health Fair at Uniondale Park on Saturday, June 10.
Before going on hiatus in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, ComeInUnity was held annually to build community pride and inspire attendees by sharing love and joy through laughter, singing, dancing, playing, and giving back to the historic hamlet.
This year’s highlights included a performance by Uniondale High School’s award-winning “Rhythm of the Knight” show choir for the hundreds in attendance and a display of Uniondale Fire District trucks and ambulances. MC Lady Vee was the master of ceremonies for the event, which featured music by DJ Dkhari; face painters donated by Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and Affinity by Molina Healthcare; balloon art by Jazmyn Fuentes; bouncy houses; games; prizes; vendors; free giveaways and more. Event co-sponsor Heeling Soles gave out size 10.5 and 13 sneakers, some donated by the Long Island Nets, to high school students and others.
There were also free haircuts provided by Freeport-based Trimz Barber Shop; hamburgers and hot dogs that were donated by Krystal Touch and prepared by Glory House Recovery, Inc.; a clothing giveaway sponsored by Millennium Sistahs; a special Kiddie Corner with games and activities spearheaded by LaLa’s Loveables, Inc.; and information about how to get free cell phones and tablets.
Resources such as employment opportunities, continuing education information, healthcare insurance alternatives, health screenings, financial literacy information, gang prevention and intervention services and food insecurity assistance were also available throughout the event. The Uniondale Public Library provided a full array of services to the public, and the Nassau County Board of Elections registered voters and demonstrated how to use voting machines.
“More than just a celebration of summer’s start, ComeInUnity is all about bringing families together and celebrating the diversity and community pride that makes Uniondale and the surrounding communities such a special and vibrant place in Nassau County,” Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D - Freeport) said. “We’re all very happy that the return of this event was so well received, and hopeful for many more successful events in the years ahead.”
COMEINUNITY SPONSORS included Glory House Recovery, Inc.; Trimz Barber Shop; Charmaine Robin (State Farm, Uniondale); the Uniondale Fire District; Uniondale ROTC cadets; and the Town of Hempstead. Additional contributions were provided by LaLa’s Loveables Childcare; Judge Ferrell; NY Inflatables, the Uniondale School District, Fancy Frenz; Nassau County Board of Elections and Long Island Cares, and many other community partners.
