Legislator Kevan M. Abrahams Intern of The Week:
Ibrahim Suhail
Ibrahim Suhail, a resident of Valley Stream and sophomore attending CUNY Queens College, is spending a portion of his summer interning in the office of Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D - Freeport). Mr. Suhail plans to graduate in 2021 with a degree in computer science and become a software engineer. Upon becoming a software engineer, Ibrahim hopes on developing software for hospitals and clinics to inexpensively treat patients.
His interest in health care carries over to national government policy initiatives. Mr. Suhail is a supporter of single-payer healthcare and argues that the United States should move in that direction because many major nations already have it and he feels it’s a basic human necessity.
The one person who truly inspires Ibrahim more than anyone else is Legislator Abrahams; when he was elected in 2002, he at the time was the youngest person to be sworn in as a Nassau County Legislator. Mr. Suhail said it’s a good example of young people becoming active in government and contributing to a flourishing community.
“Only when the young stand up and take leadership will the basic problems of the world come to an end.” Since Abrahams has been in office, he has supported helping the community in several ways, especially in combating gang violence and stabilizing healthcare.
