(ELMONT and LAWRENCE, N.Y.) - In an effort to accelerate the rate at which eligible residents are vaccinated, Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D - Lawrence) is urging health officials to open additional COVID-19 vaccination distribution centers at Third Legislative District community hubs - including Belmont Park and the Five Towns Community Center.
His advocacy comes as Nassau County, in partnership with Northwell Health and New York State, opened the doors to a COVID-19 vaccine distribution center at Nassau Community College in Uniondale on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
“I would like to thank County Executive Curran for her efforts to ramp up COVID-19 vaccine distribution in Nassau County and opening an additional distribution center at Nassau Community College,” Legislator Solages said. “Unfortunately, throughout the state and country, we have seen problems with vaccines being allocated but not administered - and I agree that Nassau County must do all it can to ensure we are swiftly administering every available dose.”
“While the new distribution center at Nassau Community College is a vital first step, I believe that additional sites are needed throughout the County so that eligible residents have easy access to vaccinations,” Legislator Solages added. “As the County explores future sites, I respectfully request consideration of sites located in the Third Legislative District, including Belmont Park and the Five Towns Community Center. By utilizing these and other centrally located community hubs, we can streamline the delivery of this life-saving vaccine to our residents.”
In their role as coordinator of the Long Island hub of the State’s regional vaccine network, Northwell Health officials have stated their intent to work with County officials to establish vaccination sites throughout Nassau County, and have established a Health Equity Task Force to ensure the vaccine swiftly reaches high-risk populations in communities faced with historic disparities in access to health care.
