(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D - Lawrence) commemorated Wednesday, Feb. 1 as World Hijab Day by welcoming Wazma Wardak Hassan, founder and CEO of Afghan Americans of New York (AANY), to the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building.
During Hassan’s visit, Legislator Solages presented her with a Nassau County Legislature Citation in recognition of her ongoing efforts to promote greater interfaith acceptance in a manner that provides Muslim women with a platform to share their stories, confront stereotypes, and educate the public about their beliefs and customs.
“World Hijab Day is an important opportunity for all of us to learn directly from our Muslim friends and neighbors by celebrating religious expression and cultural understanding,” Legislator Solages said. “I am thankful to my friend Wazma Wardak Hassan for her tireless efforts to raise awareness about this day and human rights issues around the world.”
