Saddle Rock Grist Mill

HHSaddleRockgristmill

Constructed around 1700 and restored to its mid-19th-century appearance, the Saddle Rock Grist Mill is one of the few remaining tidal mills left in the country and serves as a reminder of the importance that these mills once played in the economic life of Long Island. The mill, which was used to grind grain and corn, overlooks Little Neck Bay. The Saddle Rock Grist Mill remained in the private hands of the original owners and their families until 1950 when the Eldridge estate was sold to a developer. It was left by a descendant of the property owners (the Udalls) to the Nassau County Historical Society and was subsequently given to the County in 1955.
