[ARCHIVED] Bynoe Urges County Executive Blakeman, Legislature to Make Juneteenth a Paid County Holiday

WHAT - Following action earlier today by the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County Legislator Siela A. Bynoe (D - Westbury) is urging Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and her Legislative Majority colleagues to follow suit by supporting her proposal to make Juneteenth a paid holiday for County employees as well.

Legislator Bynoe filed legislation on Feb. 2 that would add Juneteenth to the County’s list of paid holidays and direct the County to promptly commence collective bargaining with labor organizations to effectuate the change. Since that time, County Executive Blakeman and the Legislative Majority have taken no action toward enacting the proposal.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It specifically refers to the June 19, 1865 issuance of Union General Gordon Granger’s “General Order No. 3,” which brought news of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to the people of Texas.

WHEN - Wednesday, June 15, 2022

TIME - Legislator Bynoe will be available for on-camera and telephone interviews from 10 a.m. - noon.

WHERE - Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building1550 Franklin Avenue Mineola, N.Y. 11501
