Cannabis Dashboard

Overview

New York State legalized recreational use of marijuana and cannabis products in 2021. According to The Center for Disease Control, marijuana use can have negative impacts on brain health, heart health, lung health, mental health, and can be associated with substance use disorder and unintentional poisoning. These harmful effects can be more severe in babies, children, teenagers and during pregnancy. For more information, please view the CDC Marijuana Fact Sheet. The Nassau County Department of Health Office of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Planning (NCDOH OEBP) has created an interactive dashboard which visualizes trends in cannabis related emergency department (ED) visits.  This dashboard will be routinely updated.

Technical Notes

This dashboard was created with data from the New York State Electronic Syndromic Surveillance System. This data includes Nassau County residents and non-residents who visited any of the 12 Nassau County EDs with cannabis syndrome as their chief complaint. The definition of the cannabis syndrome can be found below.

Data Metrics

Rate: The rates reflected in the dashboard refer to the frequency of ED visits, divided by the population within each zip code (ESRI 2023 population estimates), per 100,000 population.

Frequency: The frequencies reflected in the dashboard refer to the number of emergency department visits per selected category.

Syndrome Definitions

The New York State Department of Health defines Cannabis Syndrome as all ED visits with specific evidence relating to cannabis/marijuana consumption within a reasonable doubt, whether for medical or recreational purposes. ED visits with references to synthetic cannabis are excluded. Ideally, this definition would capture changing trends in the number of patients citing cannabis/marijuana abuse, dependence, use, poisoning, and newborn affected by maternal use of cannabis/marijuana.

Data Suppression for Confidentiality

Numerators less than 6 have been suppressed to maintain confidentiality.
