Biography:
Debra Mulé embarked upon her fourth term as a Nassau County Legislator on Jan. 1, 2024 and her first representing the newly apportioned Sixth Legislative District, which encompasses the communities of Baldwin, Roosevelt and South Hempstead and portions of Freeport and Oceanside. In the Legislature, Debra is the Ranking Member on the Veterans, Senior Affairs and Aircraft Noise Abatement committees, and serves on the Legislature’s Towns, Villages & Cities, Economic & Community Development, and Minority Affairs Committees.
During her six years of service in the Legislature, Legislator Mulé has delivered on a series of long-awaited priorities for her constituents. As a leading advocate for reinvestment in Nassau County's aging infrastructure, Legislator Mulé has advocated strenuously for proactive preventative measures to address and prevent sinkholes on County roads. She has been instrumental in securing more than $14.4 million in capital plan commitments for Baldwin Complete Streets; $3 million for traffic and pedestrian safety improvements on Merrick Road; and more than $18 million in capital plan commitments for Grand Avenue traffic safety improvements, including a new phase stretching from Stanton Avenue to the Southern State Parkway; and in Freeport, she worked to deliver $7.6 million for improvements to North Main Street.
In South Hempstead, Legislator Mulé has shepherded a crucial flood mitigation project on Long Beach Road under the Southern State Parkway in South Hempstead to completion and will build upon that progress with $9.44 million in additional capital plan funding for a second phase of extensive traffic safety improvements to Long Beach Road. As a representative of numerous coastal communities, she has furthermore championed the County's Bay Park Conveyance Project, which redirects effluent in a manner that greatly decreases the amount of nitrogen in Reynolds Channel and the Western Bays for the purpose of restoring the health of aquatic ecosystems in this area and supplementing ongoing flood mitigation efforts.
With an eye toward preserving our community’s historic and natural treasures, Legislator Mulé has secured $1.5 million to date for the rehabilitation of Baldwin’s historic Kellogg House and millions more for drainage improvements and beautification at Silver Lake Park. Across the district, she has leveraged the County’s Community Revitalization Program (CRP) grants to fund a mobile command post for the Baldwin Fire District; a fire engine for the South Hempstead Fire Department; a mobile health center for the Baldwin UFSD, equipment for Baldwin-based Sanitation District 2, and more.
Legislatively, she co-sponsored a precedent-setting ban on the non-consensual sharing of intimate images that went statewide, as well as a ban on single-use Styrofoam products and legislation to reduce the use of single-use plastic and paper bags.
ABOUT DEBRA MULÉ
Debra earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music from the College of William and Mary and earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from the Virginia Commonwealth University. She currently serves as a cantor at the Our Holy Redeemer R.C. Church in Freeport.
As a social worker and community leader, Debra has been giving back to the residents of Nassau County for more than two decades.
While serving on her daughters’ PTA, Debra was elected to the Freeport School Board. During three terms, she was elected Vice President and ultimately President. From there, she won election to the Village of Freeport Board of Trustees in 2015 and served in that capacity until 2018, when she was elected to the Legislature.
Debra and her husband Steve, a IBEW Local 3 electrician, have resided in Freeport since 1990 and have two adult daughters Victoria and Elizabeth.
