Lifeguard Instruction Course
Nassau County Aquatic Center is planning on offering Red Cross courses for certification and Nassau preparation courses for lifeguards to get ready to take the Nassau Lifeguard Exam.
Notes and Disclaimers:
- You must pass the pre-test, pre-course and/or have relevant certifications to be let into a course.
- If the course requires a pre-test, you must pay after the pre-test and before the first meeting. If there is no pre-test, you must pay upon registration.
- Class size varies based on the course and instructor availability; if the number of candidates exceeds the number of spots available, candidates will be waitlisted.
- You must attend all sessions to receive a certification, absences are not allowed.
- No make up classes are available. For all Red Cross course, any absence will result in not becoming certified.
- Candidates must meet age requirements by last scheduled meeting.
- Class Schedule is subject to change.
Lifeguarding Pretest Preparation | ||||||||||||||||||
| Cost: $40 | Age: At least 15 years old | Class Size: 3 - 10 swimmers per class | |||||||||||||||
Purpose: To help swimmers pass the Red Cross Lifeguarding Pretest. | ||||||||||||||||||
Course Entry Details: Comfortable in deep water, Able to swim 3 laps consecutively, front crawl and/or breaststroke and able to tread for 1 minute without hands. | ||||||||||||||||||
Course Details: Swimmers will gain experience in the swim-tread-swim sequence and the timed event of retrieving the brick from 7-10 feet and swimming with it. The swim-tread-swim sequence starts with a 150-yard swim in good form followed by 2 minutes treading without hands then finally another 50-yard swim. To successfully complete the brick event, the swimmer must start in the water and swim 20 yards, submerge, and retrieve the brick from 7 to 10 feet. Holding the brick with 2 hands, kick on back to starting position and exit the water without the ladder. | ||||||||||||||||||

Red Cross Lifeguarding Course | ||||||||||
| Cost: $250 | Age: At least 15 years old | Class Size: 5-10 candidates | |||||||
Purpose: To certify qualified candidates to be Red Cross Lifeguards | ||||||||||
Course Entry Details: First, swim 150 (front crawl and/or breaststroke), tread for 2 minutes without using hands, then swim another 50 (front crawl and/or breaststroke). Then, starting from in the water, swim out 20 yards to retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7-10 feet. Surface on back and return to starting position without using hands. Exit the water within 1:40. | ||||||||||
Course Details: The Red Cross Lifeguarding Course can be presented as either a blended course (online and in person work) or instructor led. Blended courses are approximately 7 hours online and 22 hours in person. Instructor led are approximately 28 hours on activities. | ||||||||||

Nassau County Swim Prep | ||||||||||||||||||
| Cost: $40 | Age: At least 15 years old | Class Size: 3-10 swimmers | |||||||||||||||
Purpose: For individuals that have a current lifeguarding certificate that would like to train for the Nassau County Lifeguarding test, focusing on the timed swims. It is highly suggested that candidates practice outside of the class as well. | ||||||||||||||||||
Course Entry Details: Candidates must be able to swim two lengths front crawl in reasonable form. | ||||||||||||||||||
Course Details: Candidates cover the timed 50 and timed 200 with headfirst entries and turns being covered. | ||||||||||||||||||

Nassau County Test Prep | ||||||||||||||||||
| Cost: $20 | Age: At least 15 years old | Class Size: 3-10 Swimmers | |||||||||||||||
Purpose: To expose candidates to the Nassau County Lifeguard Test and give them ideas on what they need to practice. It is highly suggested that candidates practice outside of the class as well. | ||||||||||||||||||
Course Entry Details: Candidates must have a lifeguarding certificate. | ||||||||||||||||||
Course Details: Candidates will be exposed to the timed 50 and timed 200, rescues with and without equipment, front and rear escapes and getting the brick from approximately 10 feet. | ||||||||||||||||||

Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification | ||||||||||
| Cost: $100 | Age: At least 15 years old | Class Size: 5-10 lifeguards | |||||||
Purpose: To recertify candidates with a valid Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate to the Red Cross standard. | ||||||||||
Course Entry Details: Candidates must have a current, valid Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification. Pass the pretest of swimming 150 (front crawl and/or breaststroke), tread for 2 minutes without using hands, then swim another 50 (front crawl and/or breaststroke). Then starting from in the water, swim out 20 yards to retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7-10 feet. Surface on back and return to starting position without using hands. Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Aide | ||||||||||
| Cost: None | Age: At least 16 years old | Class Size: 1 Candidate | |||||||
Purpose: To interview candidates that would like to instruct other to swim with us. | ||||||||||
Course Entry Details: Candidates must be comfortable swimming all six strokes, treading and floating in deep water. | ||||||||||
Course Details: Have a conversation with us on swimming experience and comfort teaching others. Candidates will be swimming all six strokes, treading for a minute, and floating on back for a minute. | ||||||||||

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor | ||||||||||
| Cost: $325 | Age: At least 15 years old | Class Size: 4-6 Candidates | |||||||
Purpose: To train candidates to teach Red Cross swim lessons and presentations to help keep their students safe in on and around the water. | ||||||||||
Course Entry Details: Candidates must be able to swim 25 yards of Front crawl, Backcrawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke and 15 yards of Butterfly all of level 4 proficiency. Candidates must also be able to tread for 1 minute and maintain position on back for 1 minute. | ||||||||||
Course Details: Candidates will be introduced to the Red Cross materials and guided on ways to present its concepts. They will refine their own and one another’s strokes performance also gain experience presenting topics to the class. Course is blended with approximately 7 hours online work and 24 hours in person. | ||||||||||

Purpose: To train qualified candidates to instruct Red Cross Lifeguarding Courses. | ||||||||||
Course Entry Details: Candidates must have a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid and pass the prerequisite skill assessment scenario. | ||||||||||
Course Details: Candidates will gain experience instructing and presenting Red Cross Lifeguarding Courses. Offered as a blended course, about 2 hours online and 16 hours in person. | ||||||||||

Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Recertification | ||||||||||
| Cost: $200 | Age: At least 17 years old | Class Size: 6 Lifeguard Instructors/Trainers | |||||||
Purpose: The purpose of the Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Recertification course is to give instructors and instructor trainers the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer certification. | ||||||||||
Course Entry Details: To participate in the Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Recertification course, candidates must provide proof of a current (or expired by no more than 1 year) American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor or Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer certification. | ||||||||||
Course Details: Candidates must complete the basic-level Lifeguarding Blended Learning course online session and the Lifeguarding Instructor/Trainer Recertification course online session. Attend the entire course and participate in the in-person session. Complete the skill practice and polish session, demonstrating skills to the standard. Conduct one teaching assignment as part of the skill practice and polish session. Conduct one teaching evaluation for an instructor recertification candidate as part of the skill practice and polish session (Instructor Trainer). Pass the Lifeguarding Instructor/Trainer Recertification Course written exam with a minimum score of 80 percent. Courses are Blended with about 7 hours in person activities. | ||||||||||
