Nutrition Programs
All meals meet 1/3 of the Daily Required Intake (DRI) and are approved by a Registered Dietician (RD). Participants are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution towards the program, but there is no fee for services.
For more information about our Nutrition Programs, please contact (516) 227-8900.
Home Delivered Meals
Since 1984, New York State's Wellness in Nutrition Program (WIN) has provided funding primarily for home-delivered meals, to frail older persons who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, in addition to supporting nutrition counseling, nutrition education and congregate meals.
The purposes of the program are to reduce hunger and food insecurity; prevent social isolation; and promote the health and well-being of older adults. In addition, home-delivered meals also represent an essential service for many caregivers, by helping them to maintain their own health and well-being through the provision of nutritious meals to those they care for.
All the following program eligibility criteria are based on an in-home assessment conducted by a case manager and must be met by recipients:
- 60 years of age or older; spouse of eligible service recipient; or handicapped non-senior residing with a service recipient
- Nassau County resident
- has impaired mobility
- unable to cook and/or shop safely due to health reasons
- no local support system (formal or informal) available to meet needs
- able to understand and carry out procedures to safeguard the food provided
For more information about our Nutrition Programs, please contact (516) 227-8900.
Congregate Meal Programs
Under the Older Americans Act, Title III-C1 (OAA Section 331) authorizes meal provision nutrition education and nutrition counseling in congregate settings, which help to keep older Americans healthy and prevent the need for more costly medical interventions. Besides meals, services include nutrition screening and education and nutrition assessment and counseling as appropriate. The program also presents opportunities for social engagement and meaningful volunteer roles, which contribute to overall health and well-being.
