On August 26th, Legislator Tom McKevitt joined other elected officials to unveil a historic marker at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building to the suffragettes from Long Island who helped women gain the right to vote. The unveiling was on Women’s Equality Day, the day started in the 1970s to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment, granting suffrage no matter of sex. 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the passage of the amendment.
The marker memorializes the 1913 Suffrage March that took place in front of the Theodore Roosevelt Building from Mineola to Hempstead.
Legislator McKevitt was joined by County Executive Laura Curran, Assemblyman Ed Ra, District Attorney Madeline Singas, and County Legislators Delia DeRiggi-Whitton and Ellen Birnbaum
