Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr. recently honored Pavithran Ravindran of W.T. Clarke High School for being named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search. Pavithran was one of only 300 semifinalists in the nationwide competition, which receives nearly 2,000 entries.
For his research, Pavithran worked with LIU’s Dr. Nadarajah Vasanthan to try to reduce the crystallinity of polyhydroxybutyrate, or PHB, a polymer plastic that has many scientific uses, but is extremely brittle in its natural state and cannot be used to its full potential in the medical field.
“This is a tremendous achievement, both for Pavithran and for Clarke High School,” said Legislator Dunne. “Pavithran is a bright young man with a promising future ahead of him.”
