Nassau County Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves recently joined with County Executive Edward Mangano, and Legislators Rose Walker and Michael Venditto to announce that Nassau County has been designated a “Purple Heart County.”
“I would like to thank all our veterans for their service to our country,” said Presiding Officer Gonsalves. “All veterans have sacrificed something for us, and those who have earned the Purple Heart have paid an extra price for which we are all eternally grateful.”
The Purple Heart was first established by George Washington in 1782, and took its current form in 1917. It is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving in the armed forces.
