[ARCHIVED] Legislator Venditto Announces “Anti-Puppy Mill” Legislation

Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto has sponsored a local law to prevent the sale of dogs and cats in Nassau County that may have been bred in “puppy mills” or by cat breeders which are known to mistreat animals bred for sale.

The proposed law will ban pet dealers from selling dogs or cats that are less than 14 weeks old. This allows for proper weaning of a puppy or kitten from its mother. The proposed law also requires all pet dealers provide daily access to appropriate amounts of clean, fresh water and food for the pets offered for sale.

“Sadly, there are breeders and brokers out there that operate substandard facilities which subject dogs and cats to inhumane and unsafe living conditions. By setting standards for the treatment of animals prior to sale, we can send a message to all breeders, brokers and pet dealers that we do not condone such misconduct in Nassau County. Additionally, this legislation will provide assurances to families buying a dog or cat that the animal has been fairly treated and handled before the new owner welcomes the animal into its new home,” said Legislator Venditto.

The proposed bill also sets standards for cage size and labeling as well as how cages are stacked at retailers, and requires stores to let buyers know that federal inspection reports of the breeders are available upon request. There will be a $500 fine per violation of the county law.
