DEAR EDITOR:
At the end of the 2021 legislative session, the New York State Legislature passed key gun safety legislation that ends civil immunity for the handful of unscrupulous gun manufacturers, distributors and retailers whose firearms are linked to nearly three-quarters of the State’s shooting deaths. They also passed the Scott J. Beigel Unfinished Receiver Act, which will ensure parts for homemade “ghost guns” sold online are serialized and traceable like any other firearm.
These measures will equip law enforcement with new tools to fight the scourge of illegal guns in our community. I am thankful to State Senator Anna Kaplan and New York State Assembly Member Charles Lavine for their leadership and tireless efforts to secure passage of the Beigel Act, and deeply appreciative of Linda Beigel Schulman’s relentless advocacy to enact common-sense gun laws in the memory of her son, Scott – a heroic figure who lost his life while trying to save others during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre.
