(ALBERTSON, N.Y.) – Through the power of video chat technology, Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D – Great Neck) “visited” the Herricks School District’s Searingtown School in Albertson on Wednesday, March 3, where she was welcomed to Diane Corgan’s third-grade class as a guest reader.
The virtual visit coincided with Poetry Day at the school. Legislator Birnbaum shared some of her favorite poems for youngsters, including “Spring,” “Animal Crackers,” “The Swing,” “The Birthday Child” and “At the Zoo.” After discussing poetry with students, Legislator Birnbaum answered questions about her hobbies and career, as well as the functions of local, state, and federal government.
Legislator Birnbaum’s visit was part of the school’s Read Across America celebration, which is recognized nationally each year on March 2.
“Former American Poet Laureate Rita Dove once described poetry as ‘language at its most distilled and most powerful.’ It was truly a pleasure to join the Searingtown School in its celebration of this literary artform, and I look forward to future opportunities for encouraging young people to embrace a lifelong love of reading,” Legislator Birnbaum said.
