NASSAU COUNTY LEGISLATURE LEADS VIRTUAL FOOD DONATION RAISES MORE THAN 5,000 LBS. OF FOOD

Last month, the Nassau County Legislature Majority Caucus joined with Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank to host a virtual food drive in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased demand for donations.

The drive allowed users to shop for food items and supplies on the Long Island Cares website, and put them in their virtual cart, and pay for their value. Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank then used the money donated for those items to provide those items to people in need.

The goal set for the virtual food drive was 5,000 pounds of food. As of today, the virtual food drive has exceeded its goal, having donations of more than 5,783 pounds of food.

On May 21st members of the Nassau County Legislature joined with Long Island Cares CEO Paule Pachter to see how much food had been donated, and encourage other groups to hold virtual food drives as well.

Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello said: "I was proud to join Long Island Cares to hold a virtual food drive to help those in our community continuing to struggle with the financial burden brought on by COVID-19. The loss of jobs and the closure of businesses is creating hardships across our region. We will continue to look for new and innovative ways to help our residents during this difficult time."
