(GREAT NECK, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D – Great Neck) joined the Iranian American Jewish Federation of New York (IAJF-NY) on Tuesday, April 28 as members of the organization distributed thousands of surgical masks to residents during a drive-through distribution event in the Great Neck Library parking lot.

With traffic-directing assistance from the Nassau County Police Department, IAJF-NY board members and volunteers distributed approximately 7,000 masks during the event. Separately, they delivered another 3,000 masks to seniors, food pantries and other organizations that serve communities that face an elevated COVID-19 risk. IAJF-NY purchased the masks from Costello’s ACE Hardware in Great Neck, which sold the masks to the organization at cost.

“The Iranian American Jewish Federation of NY’s mask give-out event is one of many initiatives offered to our community,” said Great Neck resident Kouros (Kris) Torkan, Executive Vice President of IAJF-NY. “The recent response to the pandemic has included significant support to seniors, first responders, food banks and many other recipients in need.”

The Great Neck-based organization has been active in community support initiatives for more than 18 years.

“Through its ongoing COVID-19 relief initiatives, the Iranian American Jewish Federation of New York continues to distinguish itself as an indispensible community resource,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “Thanks to the efforts of Kris Torkan, IAJF-NY Vice President Farzin Kimiabaksh and all of the members and volunteers of this organization, hundreds of families left this event better equipped to protect themselves during this pandemic. I am thankful for their commitment to philanthropy during these incredibly challenging times.”
