(GLEN COVE, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D – Great Neck) joined dozens of community, religious and political leaders at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center on Monday, Dec. 9 to announce the formation of an Islandwide Task Force Against Anti-Semitism and Symbols of Hate.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone convened the Task Force following a series of bias incidents across Long Island, including the discovery of anti-Semitic and hateful vandalism at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center.

Leaders of the task force are slated to convene in the coming weeks to develop coordinated, island-wide efforts to educate the public, promote diversity, and confront bigotry through partnership with law enforcement and community leaders.

“At a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise across the world, it is essential for Long Islanders of all religious and cultural backgrounds to stand together to denounce hatred and promote acceptance through advocacy and education,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “This comprehensive task force will ensure the necessary tools are in place to foster a climate in which bias and acts of hate are never accepted.”
