WHAT: Health care professionals, advocates and community leaders continue to raise awareness of an ongoing mental health and suicide epidemic that impacts every segment of the population regardless of age, gender, cultural or socioeconomic background.
According to a New York Times article, more than 47,000 Americans died by suicide in 2017 and more than 1.4 million adults attempted suicide. The following year, more than 2.2 million people called the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 1(800)-273-TALK.
To better protect the health, safety, and welfare of all residents, Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (Woodbury) filed legislation on Oct. 17 to create a countywide three-digit "9-8-8" suicide lifeline telephone number. This will ensure residents have rapid and reliable access to trained counselors through an easily recognizable mental health crisis hotline.
