(GREAT NECK, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) visited the William A. Shine Great Neck South High School on Monday, Sept. 23 to observe the International Day of Sign Languages. During her visit, she attended an American Sign Language class and learned words and phrases from the students and teacher, Kathy McAleer. Great Neck South High School Principal Dr. Christopher Gitz also joined the session.
Each of the students in the Regents-track American Sign Language course taught Legislator Birnbaum a specific word or phrase from a PowerPoint presentation composed for the visit.
“By promoting American Sign Language throughout our community, educators play an important role in creating a fairer society with greater opportunities for our Deaf and hard-of-hearing neighbors,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “I was pleased to witness these efforts in action in our classrooms and thank Mrs. McAleer and her wonderfully enthusiastic students for a very informative visit.”
