Indian Independence Day marks the implementation of the United Kingdom’s Indian Independence Act of 1947, which shifted legislative sovereignty from the United Kingdom’s Parliament to India’s Constituent Assembly. The day it took effect was declared a national holiday symbolizing the end of British oppression and colonial rule.

County Executive Curran is scheduled to offer remarks during the program, which includes vocal performances by community singers highlighting traditional Indian music and culture. An Indian breakfast will be served. The event is presented in partnership with the Long Island India Day Parade; the Indian Association of Long Island; and the Indian American Forum.
